HHS announced Thursday that it has awarded nearly $49 million in grants to help 48 states and the District of Columbia plan for the establishment of health insurance Exchanges. (The only states not receiving grants at this time are Alaska and Minnesota.)

The number of people without health insurance rose 9.4% to 50.7 million people in 2009, the highest number of uninsured since 1987, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. That represented 16.7% of the U.S. population in 2009 compared with 15.4% in 2008.
